The Finnish designer Eero Aarnio is acknowledged for two concepts: creating exceptional and modern designs for home furnishings and doing them with space-age plastic materials. One such Aarnio work that has both those feature is his Bubble Chair. Established in 1968, the Bubble Chair describes Aarnio’s plain yet exceptional method to modern furniture design that is still admired to this period.

As its label implies, the Bubble Chair is a chair that seems like a huge bubble. The Bubble Chair’s empty, spherical body is completed from heated and blown clear acrylic resin, a synthetic composite composition recognized for its transparent qualityand for being very tough to wear and tear. The frame of the chair is built-in with a refined metal hoop for additional support and two silver or brightly decorated cushions of fabric, leather, or vinyl are additional to the interior. And to further set itself apart from usual chair design, the Bubble Chair is suspended from the ceiling by a stretched steel chain.

The Bubble Chair is a direct descendant to Aarnio’s Ball Chair, a likewise spherical fiberglass chair which he created in 1964. Aarnio like to enhance the Ball Chair’s design by including a light in its interior, which in turn led to the design of a transparent Ball Chair which accepted light to come into from all sides.
