Eileen Gray: Founder of Modernity in Furniture Designs

Even though she is not as famous as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, there is no doubt to the important legacy the Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray has made in 20th century modern furniture. A accepted as one of the leaders of the modernism movement in furniture design. Her notions for designs which range from chairs to table designs, destroyed the standard conventions of furniture design and have inspired designers to this day.

Even though she has created a number of furniture designs in her career, Eileen Gray is more typically known for one design, the Bibendum Chair. called after the mascot of the Michelin tire company, the Bibendum chair is a huge red leather chair with a mixture back and armrest made from padded leather tubes. The chair was custom built for the home of milliner Mathieu Levy in Rue de Lota, Paris, which Gray had a job on from 1917 to 1921.

To grasp its evenly wide girth, the Bibendum Chair was filled} with stainless steel tubes for legs and a beechwood frame in the seat’s core. The seat also shows original] rubber webbing that crisscrossed the chair’s base for additional support and comfort. And to furnishings of the apartment it was ade for (notably the tribal wall hangings), Eileen Gray layered the Bibendum Chair with soft red leather in plain red.

In addition to the Bibendum Chair, Eileen Gray also made a number of designs for furniture and appliances, such as the E-1027 bedside table and tube light, as well as doing her professional profession in architecture. However, her works have almost washed out into shadows until the 1970s, when her designs were remade during an auction. presently Gray’s furniture designs are highly looked after by collectors and furniture lovers alike.
